A whopping total of 11050 Malaysians have pledged to go meatless tomorrow (nov.25) in conjunction with International Meatless Day - Animal Rights Day. More pledges are expected to come in tonight and tomorrow morning.

This is the highest figure ever achieved by Malaysians surpassing last year's figure of 8563 pledges since the campaign started in Malaysia in 1996. Last year 84.2 million people all over world pledged to meatless.

Among the notable VIP's who pledged to go meatless this year is YB Tuan Danny Law Heng Kiang and YB Tuan Abdul Malik bin Abdul Kassim (Penang State Ministers)who signed the pledge in Penang on Sunday, November 16, 2009. A total of 148 children of the Uplands International School also pledged to go meatless amid concerns of the deteriorating world climate conditions.

Other activities organised to celebrate the meatless day included

1. The International Meatless Day Charity Carnival 2009 held on Nov.16
2. The Meatless Day function organised by the Federation of I Kuan Tao Associations in Kuala Lumpur.

The campaign received wide coverage in the local media and created awareness about the need for Malaysians to change their dietary habits.

The Malaysian Meatless Day Campaign Committee together with Sadhu Vaswani Welfare Fund will tomorrow feed residents of the Silver Jubilee Home for the Aged a vegetarian lunch to commemorate World Meatless Day.

The International Meatless - Animal Rights Day campaign was conceived in India in 1986 by the Sadhu Vaswani Mission - a social service organisation dedicated to serving mankind, especially the poor and downtrodden. The mission has declared 25th November as an international meatless day in memory of its founder, Sadhu T.L. Vaswani - philosopher, spiritual leader and educationist who practiced and preached the message of non-violence for all beings.
